IV. These are coins of the Roman Emperors during what was called the "Silver Age"  Rome was still very powerful but was beset with sucession problems when an Emperor passed.

The deified Commodus: (obv)


son of Marcus Aurelius

Debased (~40-50%?) silver antoninus issued by Trajan Decius as part of a set of 12 commorative antoninii. Commodus was the only bad one in the group.


Caracalla AE 44 (medallion) EF

This medallion of Caracalla is basically without signs of wear & of very large module (44 mm dia). Unfortunately it was also a bit expensive, costing $3,100 in 1992.

Caracalla 211 - 217 AD

Caracalla is one of the more common Emperors commemorated on Roman medallions. He also extended citizenship throughout the Roman Empire although it has been said that he did this to increase the tax base.

He was assasinated by his Preatorian Prefect, Macrinus who then became Emperor.
