Storage & Display

Here is what seems to work and not work

click on the pix for version which shows obverse & reverse

Safe coin holders

Mylar (non-vinyl) coins flips:
you can easily see coins,  these are inert,
however the plastic cracks with frequent use or with big thick coins -- thus replacements are handy

This is a mylar flip

coin envelopes

must use an inner liner: polyproplyene or mylar baggies
cannot see coins but can easily label the envelopes

Air-Tite coin containers

These supposedly seal the coins in an airtight capsule
they can also be combined with albulms/display cases where you would not want the actual coin exposed: e.g. for a display of high grade coins for example.

their bulk makes them a little difficult to store, and they cost more than flips.  All of these supplies can be located here

Storage

some cheap wooden boxes may not be safe
these cheap boxes seem to release a gas which stains the polypropylene baggies brown: thus I won't use them for coins

Silica Gels shown w/ a quarter for size comparison.
The 40g silica gel canister driers cost me $3. each.
Hopefully they last longer than the small free ones (which don't last long at all)? At least they come with regeneration instructions (300F for 3 hrs, although they turn blue at 250F for 1/2 hr)

Here is a humorous site which discusses the gels  http://users.adelphia.net/~jthm/

Buy the canisters and don't fool with the little ones as they die almost immediately. All of these need regeneration as they're pink. There is also a 1 kg box which is not much more expensive.
